On Most Days, in the US, There's a Mass Shooting

By: Julien Assouline | Documentation

On October 1st, 2017 a lone gunman opened fire on a country music festival in Las Vegas, killing 59 and injuring 241. It was one of the worst mass shootings, in the US, in modern history.

It wasn’t the only mass shooting that day. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there was another shooting in Lawrence, Kansas where three people were killed and two injured. (Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as, four or more shot and/or killed in a single event, not including the shooter.)

Since October 1st there have been five mass shootings in the US.

October though isn’t a bad month. This isn’t a bad stretch of mass shootings in the US. That's because on more days than not, there is a mass shooting happening somewhere in the US. Someone is using a gun to harm and kill civilians.

282 Days, 278 Mass Shootings, 158 Days With at Least One Mass Shooting

The longest stretch without a mass shooting was five days from July 10th to July 14th.

No other developed nation has this rate of gun violence. This is a uniquely American problem, and yet there has been no action from congress.
